Next stop: Dubai!

Sir John and Lady Sorrell presenting to the Dubai Saturday Club

Since its launch in 2009, the National Art&Design Saturday Club has grown from 4 clubs to 47, with young people taking part all over the country. Now, we’ve gone international! Inspired by the Club’s success, Dr Abdulla Al Karam of the Knowledge and Human Development Authority has started the Dubai Saturday Club, and we were there to talk to over 100 young people on their first day.

Engineering their futures

Last week saw our first ever London Visit for our growing number of Science&Engineering Saturday Clubs. Members from Coleg Sir Gar, Kingston University, Ravensbourne and the University of Westminster gathered at the world-famous Science Museum for a day of insight and inspiration.

Each group visited a gallery that was directly relevant to their club’s theme for the year but not before they had enjoyed a special demonstration by one of the museum’s explainers.  In this case, it really was rocket science!

Our thanks go to the Science Museum and the Worshipful Company of Coachmakers for their support.

Tutors prepare for Summer Show

Tutors from all parts of our national network gathered last week at Tate Modern to update each other and share their experiences and expertise. The upcoming Summer Show was the hottest topic with architects Dallas Pierce Quintero on hand to advise on the design of this year’s exhibition, which will be our biggest ever and run from 22nd to 26th June.

Masterclasses

The masterclasses have been coming thick and fast throughout February, March and April, with several still to come.  Each Saturday Club spends a day with a leading professional, either at their studio or in the college/university. UCA Rochester made bespoke pieces of jewellery with Tatty Devine, Bolton designed space passenger vehicles at Priestmangoode and Westminster’s Science&Engineering Club visited Arsenal Football Club for their work on sports nutrition.

The Saturday Club at London Metropolitan University worked with English National Opera over 8 weeks to make headdresses for a performance of Akhnaten at the British Museum.  See their work in action here.

Su Shearer

Su Shearer during a Saturday Art&Design Masterclass in 2012

We have heard the very sad news that Su Shearer has died. Su has been an inspiration to all of us at the Sorrell Foundation and led a brilliant Saturday Club programme with Christine Loizou at University for the Creative Arts Epsom. She has been a member of the Saturday Club advisory committee and a great supporter of the programme. We will miss her.

Out and About

Our co-founder, Sir John Sorrell, was a keynote speaker at last month’s CHEAD (Council for Higher Education in Art & Design) Annual Conference in Bath, where we also premiered our #CreativeJourneys campaign film.  He and Frances also presented to the Principals’ Meeting of UKADIA (UK Art & Design Institutions Association).

The team also recently exhibited at Creative & Cultural Skills’ #CreativeNationUK conference and in the autumn we’ll be at the All Party Parliamentary Group on Art, Craft & Design Education.

News of upcoming events

Our friends and supporters have some exciting events coming up, all of which present some great opportunities for young people to see the latest work by contemporary artists, makers and designers.

Now showing (until 2 May) at our base and venue for our Summer Show, Somerset House, is the Pick Me Up graphic arts festival, which includes workshops, screenings and talks #pickmeuplondon.

Next up, London Craft Week (3-7 May), now in its second year, showcases hidden workshops and unknown makers alongside celebrated masters and famous studios #LCW2016.

In June, we’ll be at New Designers (29 June – 9 July), the annual showcase for recent graduates from across the UK.  Our Schools’ Tours are a great way to introduce young people to study and career options. We’re also hosting two coffee mornings for tutors to hear more about Saturday Clubs. Find out more here #ND16.

In September, the inaugural London Design Biennale (7-27 September), the brainchild of our founder Sir John Sorrell, will show the best and latest work from six continents #LDB16.
