Summer Show 2017

Club members from East Coast College: Great Yarmouth Campus and Time and Tide museum Art&Design Saturday Club

The hottest week of the year provided the warmest reception for our annual Summer Show.

From 12-18 June, the work of all 1,200 of our Club members from 53 Clubs was showcased in an exhibition designed by architects Dallas Pierce Quintero with graphics by Tom McEvoy. Hosted by Somerset House and generously supported by Imagination, the 9th Summer Show was a fitting celebration of the young participants.

Club Members' Private View

Club members attended private views over the weekend of 17 and 18 June where proud families were able to see their work of the first time. Each member was presented with a certificate of achievement and their own copy of the Saturday Club yearbook. In presenting their certificates, tutors highlighted the talent and commitment of the young people. On hand to help with the presentations were many of the professionals who have generously given Masterclasses this year.

Private View

Hundreds of special guests attended the evening private view on 15 June, when our special guest and chair of Arts Council England Sir Nicholas Serota said:

If anyone needed persuading of the power and importance of creativity, you could bring them here and it would take 30 seconds."

Writing&Talking

Our new Club, the National Writing&Talking Saturday Club has been piloted this year in partnership with the Writers’ Centre Norwich and the University of East Anglia. With a theme of The People’s City of Literature, Club members created key texts for their new city state – conjuring up folk tales, producing their own newspaper, programming a literary festival and appointing a Poet Laureate.

As well as featuring in the Yearbook 2016-17, The Saturday Club Trust have published The People’s City of Literature Anthology which showcases the work of the Writing&Talking Saturday Club members.

The National Writing&Talking Saturday Club will be running in five locations in 2017-18. If you’d like more information regarding these Clubs or running a club, please contact us at hello@saturday-club.org

Alumni Network

Lauren Hulme, Student Assistant at Manchester Metropolitan University Art&Design Saturday Club 2015-16 Graduated this year and is photographed here at New Designers

We will soon be entering the 9th year of the National Saturday Club and have seen some former Club members graduating from courses at university this summer.  Congratulations to Chris Gregory, Ben Lintell and Beth Hanley!

So we can stay in touch with all former Club members, we are launching a National Saturday Club Alumni network where they can hear about opportunities from partners like English National Opera and the Creative Dimension Trust, as well as telling us about their next steps in education.

This year’s Club members received an Alumni network card with their certificates of achievement; If you haven’t received one, or were a member from a previous year, please email hello@saturday-club.org to activate your membership.

New Designers - School Tours

This is our 4th year of running School Tours at New Designers, the show for graduating design students from all over the UK. It has been a great opportunity to show young people the huge range of subjects they could study at college or university.

The fantastic Saturday Club student assistants have been on hand to lead tours, share their own experiences of further and higher education and help school pupils meet graduates and ask lots of questions.

Many thanks to Megan Dunne and Gemma Arnold from Grimsby Institute, Paula Veleda Barea, Genesis Adewole and Giorgio Amirante from London Metropolitan Unversity and Anna Rozensteina and Zoe Hardingham from University of the Arts London, who worked with the Saturday Club Trust’s Liz Cowley and Chris Pierre.
