Our biggest ever welcome day for National Art&Design Saturday Club members!

Saturday 19th November saw our largest ever national event, with 1200 Club members from all over the country visiting galleries and museums in Belfast, Edinburgh and London.

The day was a chance for members to meet their counterparts from other Clubs, to visit a major city and to explore new museums and galleries. It’s the first time in the year that Club members get to see themselves as part of a national programme.

London

Members travelled to London for a very special event, kindly hosted by University of the Arts London (UAL) at their stunning Central St Martins (CSM) campus in King’s Cross.

Club members, their tutors and student assistants were welcomed by Jeremy Till, UAL’s Pro-Vice Chancellor and Head of CSM.  Saturday Club Trustee and Head of Environmental Responsibility at Lego, Cecilia Weckström, gave an inspiring talk about the value of ‘creating thorough doing’.

They also had the chance to see their own work on show as part of a pop-up exhibition of self-portraits and took part in a collaborative mass drawing activity led by UAL’s outreach team.

Huge thanks to the CSM Foundation and UAL Widening Participation teams for making it such a fantastic day for our members. Thanks also to Cass Art for supporting the day so generously with free bags and sketchbooks and to Derwent for providing watercolour bars for all members.

Many thanks to our partners at Barbican Art Gallery, Courtauld Gallery, Fashion & Textile Museum, Gagosian Gallery, National Portrait Gallery, Royal Academy of the Arts, Somerset House, Tate Britain, Tate Modern, Victoria & Albert Museum, Whitechapel Gallery and Wellcome Collection for hosting these Club visits. Thanks to Q-Art for arranging special tours.

Edinburgh

Members from our brand new Saturday Club at Cove Park in Argyll & Bute were also on the road on Saturday, travelling to Edinburgh for a day of inspiration.

As well as visits to the Dovecot Studios and the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, the group stopped by Martin Creed’s Work No, 1059 aka the Scotsman Steps.

Belfast

Meanwhile, over in Northern Ireland, Club members from North West Regional College in Derry travelled to Belfast.

The group visited the Royal Ulster Academy (RUA) Exhibition in the Ulster Museum. Academician and Past President of the RUA Julian Friers gave the group a guided tour, highlighting prominent Northern Irish artists and giving a personal introduction to his own work in the show.

Our grateful thanks to Julian, to Irene Fitzgerald at the RUA and to the staff of Ulster Museum for making the visit so special.
