Matt Jones, a creative director at Google, started his Masterclass – at which Cardiff Metropolitan’s Art&Design Club joined forced with the university’s Science&Engineering Club – with an informative, engaging and funny presentation about himself, his background and past projects, and the concept of service design.
The young people’s first challenge was to become what Matt called “a drawing machine”. Using toys as a starting point, each group created a table of Post-it drawings, abstracting objects to generate ideas. Initially confused, the Club members soon got into a state of “flow” and became caught up in sharing ideas. Their second activity was to design traps – for either a mouse or a ghost. The latter project, in particular, made them think conceptually, and they came up with both product and service designs that really impressed Matt when they presented them at the end of the session.
