Birmingham City University
The Saturday Changemakers Club at Birmingham City University’s STEAMhouse is part of the National Saturday Club Society&Change programme. A free 16-week hands-on programme for 13-16-year olds focused on creative problem-solving and making.
This year’s Club explores surplus food as a creative, environmental and social challenge, inviting young people to rethink how society defines, uses and discards food. Using design thinking, participants progress from curiosity and problem-framing to experimentation, prototyping and public exhibition. Through hands-on sessions in digital fabrication, robotics, packaging redesign, biomaterials, and visual storytelling, Club members transform food waste and discarded packaging into imaginative artefacts, prototypes and narratives that highlight the hidden value of surplus.
The club will provide free breakfast and snacks for all Club members.
The programme strengthens BCU’s civic mission and widens participation in creative and technical subjects, while offering inclusive learning environments supported by academics, technicians, student mentors and community partners. The Club concludes with a public showcase at STEAMhouse, contributions to Innovation Fest, and selected work presented at the National Saturday Club Summer Show in London.
