University of Cumbria & Tullie, Carlisle
This 15-week National Saturday Club (NSC) Art & Design programme offers young people aged 13-16 a hands-on introduction to a range of creative disciplines at University of Cumbria’s beautiful Brampton Road Arts Campus in Carlisle.
Through practical workshops that provide a taste of university learning, participants will develop technical skills, creative confidence, and a sense of belonging within a supportive artistic community led by University of Cumbria’s Centre for Arts and Participation. University of Cumbria arts lecturers will tutor participants in a range of skills and self-development, along with further art and design workshops at club partner venue Tullie Museum. There will be a variety of guest practitioners throughout the weeks. Weekly sessions with University of Cumbria artist academics will include developing new skills and confidence in a range of creative disciplines such as graphic design, fine art, camera work, and performance and will support those taking part to discover their own talents and interests.
The key theme for the programme will be ‘colour’ with the first session taking place at the club’s partner institution Tullie Museum. Here, the young people will begin the 15 week programme, meeting key team members from University of Cumbria and Tullie.In this first week, club members will also experience the ‘Colour: A season of shades, tints and tones’ exhibition as a starting point for the overarching journey towards creating their own artwork. Throughout the 15 weeks, club members will also take part in a Masterclasses led by a top creative industry professional, and once complete exhibit work created and produced at the National Saturday Club Summer Show – a public celebration featuring clubs from across the country.
