Inspired by her project Mapping Sanctuaries, visual artist and designer Alaa Alsaraji – previously a Saturday Club student assistant at Goldsmiths University – led a Masterclass for members of the University of West London Art&Design Club.

Mapping Sanctuaries is a collection of digital illustrations and sound pieces exploring the notions of safety and the spaces that exist between isolation and belonging within Muslim communities.

Alaa talked to the Club members about her work, encouraging them to think about places where they feel safe, and demonstrated her process of illustration. By the end of the Masterclass, Club members had illustrated their own personal ‘sanctuaries’.
