The Art&Design Saturday Club at the Cernamics Clay Lab visited the PearsonLloyd Studio this weekend for a Masterclass led by designers Amos Marchant and Luke Pearson.
Amos and Luke welcomed the Club members to the space and set the tone for the day, encouraging everyone to be playful and have fun. Luke then took the group on a tour of the studio, walking them through the different spaces, describing how they’re used for work and inspiration, as well as sharing the history of the building – from its derelict days to the redevelopment led by Luke and Tom to bring it back to life.
From there, Amos and Luke took turns presenting their career journeys and the products they’ve designed and been commissioned to create over the years. Their forward-thinking approaches and commercial success set the scene nicely for the activity that followed.
Club members were tasked with hacking a portable light and turning it into a working lamp for the home, with a balance of function and form in mind. For the rest of the day, they worked on their designs with the support of Amos, Luke and Rory, using a mix of materials including paper, wood, tissue paper, wooden rods, and padding, alongside tools in the workshop to help bring their ideas to life.
The final lamps were presented in a dark space, with each Club member talking through their vision and how they put it together. The results ranged from colour-changing clouds to structural desk lamps and ornamental bedside lamps.
