Merrist Wood College Art&Design Saturday Club took part in a Masterclass on character development with author and illustrator Andrew Clement-Hammond.
To begin, Andy introduced himself, sharing insights into his career and creative journey. He then led a series of exercises guiding Club members through different stages of character development – from initial facial features and personality traits to silhouettes and the use of shape to create distinctive, versatile characters.
Throughout the session, Andy engaged with each group, offering feedback and prompts to help refine their ideas. He also explored the creative process as a journey of decision-making, connections, and storytelling.
Towards the end, Club members selected their favourite characters and developed comic book covers considering focus, silhouette, and titles. Andy concluded the Masterclass by answering questions on career paths and the various roles involved in character design, offering valuable insights into the industry.
