Arup, city planning

  • St Mary’s University
  • Kingston University London

Science&Engineering Saturday Club members from St Mary’s University Twickenham and Kingston University London took part in a Masterclass at Arup, exploring innovative, sustainable, and resilient city design.

The session began in Arup’s Charlotte Street auditorium, where the team introduced their work across civil and structural engineering. They shared insights into major projects and the challenges of designing future-ready infrastructure.

To spark creativity, Club members took part in creative sketching exercises where they were encouraged to let their creativity flow before receiving the design brief. Divided into groups, they considered the challenges and opportunities of urban development in the context of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. Each group was given a tile to construct a model of a city section.

At the end of the session, the tiles were combined into a large-scale city concept featuring skyscrapers, police stations, waterways, and construction sites – showcasing the Club members’ vision for a sustainable urban future.
