The Northern School of Art’s Film&Screen Club took part in a Masterclass with award-winning writer and director, Mark Brown. With five feature films produced and experience writing for various studios, Mark shared his insights into the industry.
Mark began the session by discussing his career journey, recounting how he had to fight for a creative career after being discouraged at school. This was followed by a Q&A, where Club members asked questions about his collaborations with platforms like Amazon and Sky Cinema.
Next, Club members analysed a film by breaking it down into three scenes, exploring storytelling and the filmmaking process from concept to edit. They were then challenged to create a short film using only three shots, experimenting with structure, cinematography, and narrative. With cameras and tripods in hand, they filmed around the school, receiving guidance from Mark. The session ended with a screening of the films created by Club members, followed by feedback from Mark.
