MOBIE, homes for the future

  • Suffolk New College

In a Masterclass with the Ministry of Building Innovation and Education (MOBIE), Art&Design Club members from Suffolk New College designed and created future homes.

Gerry Ruffles, Head of Education, gave a short presentation on his work and the mission of MOBIE, which focuses on inspiring young people to revolutionise the way we think about homes. They aim to encourage younger generations to consider how they want to live now and in the future, giving them a voice in shaping the future of housing. After the presentation, the group began brainstorming some ideas by addressing questions such as: what is a home? What does/should it do? What makes a community?

Once they had brainstormed, Club members were tasked to construct homes using floorplans they had drawn. To create these, they considered factors such as site layout, orientation, roads, facilities and transportation. Using A0 card and scaled card cut-outs, they created models of houses, trees, cars, bicycles, lights, people and street furniture.

The session ended with everyone combining their houses to form a small village. Each Club member presented their home prototype, explaining the layout and design concepts. They were also able to take their models home with them.
