Ocean Generation, discover how to be ‘Ocean Intelligent’

  • Gateshead College

Gateshead College Performance&Theatre Saturday Club took part in a meaningful Masterclass with Ocean Generation, exploring how to be more Ocean Intelligent when attending and organising cultural events.

The session was led by Dr Gemma Connell, Ocean Generation’s Youth Engagement Lead, who has a PhD in Dance and 15 years’ experience in the performing arts industry. She introduced the organisation’s mission, the vital role of the ocean in sustaining life, and the pressing issue of plastic pollution.

Club members were then challenged to create a performance responding to these themes. Using movement and spoken word, they reflected on ocean threats, collective action, and the concept of “Imperfect Environmentalism”. One Club member from New Zealand shared a story about an island that was formed when a fisherman used a giant hook to pull up a stingray from the ocean depths. Gemma encouraged them to direct the scene, guiding other Club members in portraying characters and actions.

Each group presented their work, receiving constructive feedback. The session ended with a discussion on how the creative industries can inspire change, leaving members with a deeper understanding of the ocean’s importance and their role in protecting it.
