Create Studios Film&Screen Saturday Club took part in a Masterclass led by film director Richard Pengelley, focused on understanding the role of a director.
To begin the session, Richard introduced himself and shared insights into his career journey, offering a behind-the-scenes look at the filmmaking process. He explored core directing skills, such as camera movement and shot types, and shared real storyboards from projects he has worked on, bringing the craft to life.
Club members were then split into groups and given a short narrative outline:
“Person A enters a room and sees Person B. Person B is ____. Then ____ happens.”
With this prompt, each group was challenged to reinterpret the same scene across multiple genres, including comedy, horror and soap opera.
They filmed and edited their clips with Richard’s guidance, before showcasing their final pieces to the group. Richard concluded the day by providing creative and constructive feedback on each group’s project.
