Over two weekends, the National Saturday Club and design collective Scale Rule welcomed eight Saturday Clubs and over 100 Club members to Tate Exchange to take part in a multi-disciplinary Masterclass exploring the theme ‘The Power of Collaboration’.

Led by Scale Rule, the Masterclasses gave Club members the chance to consider selected artworks from the Tate’s permanent collection, guided by professionals from across the architecture and engineering community. After a close study of these pieces (including sketching and discussions with volunteers) the Club members returned to the Tate Exchange space to consider their responses to the artworks.

Those responses took on a three-dimensional form as each group constructed an installation using a toolkit of bamboo, rope and wool. The activity required the young people to solve structural engineering challenges, employ spatial planning techniques and collaborate in response to the brief. As an unexpected structural engineering challenge, each group was also required to suspend an egg somewhere within their installation.

Thank you to BS Bamboo for their generous support.
