The Margate School Art&Design Saturday Club had a Masterclass with Grace Attlee, exploring the art of collage across two and three dimensions, using the four elements – earth, fire, air, and water – as a creative prompt.
Club members began with a warm-up activity creating negative space collages, designing and cutting out elemental forms and composing them against a background. This was followed by a photomontage activity, where participants assembled imaginative characters from found imagery as a way to explore two dimensional composition.
After a snack break, the session moved into three dimensions with the creation of matchbox collages – intimate, layered constructions where the exterior of each box visually corresponded to a hidden world within (for example, an ocean scene on the outside concealing a mermaid inside). Club members were encouraged to enrich their pieces using additional materials such as thread, objects, and tin foil.
The session closed with a tidy-up, a group sharing and reflection, and a final check-out.
