Art&Design Saturday Club members at the University of Central Lancashire and and University of Lincoln took part in a captivating Masterclass with Animation Director Jim Le Fevre, exploring the world of Phonotrope animation.
To begin the session, Jim introduced his creative journey, sharing his experience directing animated commercials, short films, and experimental animation loops. He also offered insights into studying animation at art college, sparking curiosity about career paths in the field.
Club members then took part in a hands-on workshop using Jim’s innovative creation, the Phonotrope – a modern reinvention of the Victorian Zoetrope. Club members drew their own animations onto paper discs, checking the movement of their designs in real-time as they developed. Their animations were projected onto a large screen for group feedback and experimentation.
By the end of the session, Club members had created hand-drawn Phonotrope discs and received a digital compilation of their animated loops to take home and add to their portfolio, showcasing their creativity in motion.
