Matthew Cox, crafting timber chopping boards

Boston College Art&Design Saturday Club, Hub Sleaford and Chain Bridge Forge Craft&Making Saturday Clubs headed to the Matthew Cox studio for a Masterclass exploring woodworking.

The session began with an introduction to Matthew and the team, including insights into their career paths and the woodworking industry more broadly. The team outlined the day’s activities, offering Club members a glimpse into the skills they would learn and tools they would use.

Club members were guided through the process of creating their own timber chopping boards. Using pre-machined wood, they applied a small radius to the edges with a palm router, before sanding their boards to a professional finish. The final step involved oiling the surface with a food-safe product, resulting in a completed item ready to take home.

To end the day, the group explored the workshop and interacted with a variety of finished pieces with a better understanding of how the pieces had been crafted.
