Art&Design Saturday Club members at York St John University took part in an interactive Masterclass with artist Nicola Dale, exploring the power of performance through gestures, objects, and movement.
Nicola began the session by introducing her work, offering a fresh perspective on performance and its possibilities. The Club then took part in a warm-up activity where they created collaborative ‘outfits’ using oversized clothing, connecting themselves in unexpected ways and posing as one form.
Next, Club members were shown an image and asked to interpret it as sound, which they then had to convey to someone who couldn’t see it – using only noises, tones, or abstract language.
This was followed by a solo ribbon exercise, encouraging individual movement, experimentation, and expression.
For the main activity, Club members devised original performance pieces exploring the relationship between body and object – whether abstract or narrative, still or in motion.
They then shared their inventive performances with one another!
