Ocean Generation, how to be an ocean storyteller

  • UCL East

At UCL East, Writing&Talking Saturday Club members took part in an inspiring Masterclass with Dr Gemma Connell from Ocean Generation, exploring how to become ‘Ocean Storytellers’.

Gemma introduced Ocean Generation, its mission, and her own career path before delving into the core topic – ocean narratives. The session encouraged Club members to consider how the media portrays marine life, particularly sharks, and how storytelling can either harm or help conservation efforts.

To warm up, Club members shared their favourite sea creatures through drawing and writing exercises. This was followed by a deeper exploration into the “Jaws effect” and how fear-based narratives have negatively shaped public perception of sharks.

Working solo or in groups, Club members then began creating their own communication projects with a positive, solution-focused tone on sharks – ranging from vlog series and posters to social media campaigns and TED-style talks.

The session ended with presentations and positive feedback, leaving Club members feeling empowered to tell impactful stories.
