Richard Pengelley, role of a Director

  • London Screen Academy
  • Bracknell and Wokingham College

The Film&Screen Saturday Club at London Screen Academy had a Masterclass with award-winning director Richard Pengelley, who has worked with BBC, Sky, Amazon, Adidas and more.

Richard started the session with an insight into how he got into film before leading a guessing game where Club members looked at pre-selected screenshots from different films and discussed what they could be trying to communicate. From there, Richard reviewed filmmaking basics and techniques, covering communication intentions, how to translate those with a camera, notions of camera proximity across public and private spaces, movement, colours and focus.

Club members then split into groups and began filming short scenes, taking the same source material and translating it into different genres like comedy, soap opera and horror. After a lunch break, the groups moved into editing and exported their films.

The session ended with everyone watching the films together, whilst Richard debriefed scenes from each film and the group reflected on the work they’d created.
