Royal Opera House, ballet production

  • Anglia Ruskin University
  • London Metropolitan University

Anglia Ruskin University Art&Design and London Metropolitan University Writing&Talking Saturday Clubs headed to the Royal Opera House for a Masterclass that explored key aspects of theatre production, including costume, lighting, and set design.

The day began with a backstage tour, where Club members witnessed the Romeo and Juliet set in action, with the production team demonstrating its operation. Following this, the session delved into the design process – covering stage, lighting, costume, and wigs.

Divided into groups, Club members engaged in practical workshops tailored to their chosen departments. They learned how lighting alters the colours of faces and fabrics, how costume design can convey emotions like love and hate, why specific fabrics are chosen, and how wigs and facial hair are crafted. These immersive sessions encouraged creativity and collaboration, with outcomes ranging from painting a ballet slipper to designing a costume and experimenting with lighting for a maquette stage.

The Masterclass provided a unique insight into theatre production, allowing Club members to develop new skills and gain a deeper appreciation of the behind-the-scenes artistry that brings performances to life.
