Cornwall College

At Cornwall College Saturday Club, we aim to make use of all the college art and design facilities, giving young students aged 13 to 16 the chance to explore Photography, Drawing and Painting, 3D and Ceramics, Textiles and Print, and Digital Design.

Our Saturday Club is friendly and informal, and students enjoy the social benefits of working alongside like-minded people from many different schools and home education settings. With no curriculum or assessment requirements, we are free to let ideas evolve, get involved with local projects, shape sessions to the student’s interests, and seize creative opportunities when they arise, which means every year ends up being different.

As part of the National Saturday Club programme, the Club will also take part in three National Events: the London Visit, in which Members create a pop-up self-portrait exhibition and visit the capital’s leading museums and galleries; a Masterclass with an industry professional; and the Summer Show, where all Club Members from around the country exhibit their work at Somerset House, London – all for free.

Seeing all the artwork (at the London Visit) gave me an urge to make more art.

Saturday Club has given my daughter a great opportunity to discover her creative side which in turn has helped her to express herself and work as part of a group. All of this has given her the confidence to speak and share freely with others. It is an invaluable Club with an inspiring teacher. I feel lucky she has the opportunity to take part.

The Saturday club has been a fantastic opportunity for my son to try various different arts, many that he wouldn’t normally get to do. I think it has been great for his confidence and he has built friendships with all of the other students. It has also been good for him working in groups (which he has really enjoyed), being able to work on large pieces of art and be able to express his own artistic style that you often can’t do in school. He always comes home very enthusiastic about what he’s done each week and eager to tell me all about it.

This my daughters 3rd year at Art&Design Club and looks forward to it every week. She has made good friends, had fantastic experiences and has grown socially, emotionally, and academically. Her GCSE art has benefited from the skills she has learnt on Saturdays. Hazel, the Club tutor is great and lets the young people express themselves freely in their work. Our daughter has become more confident in finding her own voice.

The Saturday Club is so beneficial. My daughter gets to experience and learn about so many different mediums of art. It provides her with a huge sense of achievement, accomplishment and helps to build her confidence. She also gets to make new friends with children from different schools.

It’s a celebration of the year’s work, and amazing to be part of something that is so large, diverse and high profile.
